Ground Beef Stir Fry
Asian meals are often full of flavor, texture, and incredible taste. Usually, Asian recipes are made on high heat in a short period. Stir fry is one of those dishes that doesn’t take a lot of time to make, yet the dish tastes phenomenal. In this recipe, we make the sauce from scratch using delicious ingredients like light soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and a bit of sugar to balance it out. Use ground beef and colorful vegetables like bell peppers, snap peas, and ginger for the stir fry. Even though we love Stir Fry noodles, this is so much better with Basmati rice. Serve it for lunch or dinner during a busy week or over the weekend.

Essential ingredients

This is such a wonderful recipe that is incredibly flavorful and quick to make. You can find the whole recipe below. Here, we share a bit more information about the ingredients and substitutes.

Soy sauce - Light soy sauce with low sodium is the way to go. It's not too salty, yet it delivers that umami flavor. If you're using dark soy sauce, only use about 1 tbsp of sauce and two tablespoons of water.

Oyster sauce - For an extra umami flavor, add oyster sauce.

Hoisin sauce - is a lovely sweet and salty sauce that makes this dish irresistible.

Sugar - We're using white sugar in this recipe. It makes the dish slightly sweeter but not sweet. Feel free to use coconut sugar or cane sugar too.

Cornstarch - makes the sauce thick and delicious.

Vegetables - There are so many delicious, colorful vegetables in this recipe. We have bell peppers, carrots, spring onion, garlic, ginger, and snap peas.

Rice - Basmati rice is the way to go in this recipe.

Meat - we prefer using 100% ground beef. However, feel free to use a mixture of ground pork and beef, whatever works for you best.

Sprouts - we use Mung bean sprouts as they add freshness and lightness to the dish. Add them to the plate right before serving.

Storing

Since this is a 30-minute recipe, we recommend making it fresh.

However, feel free to serve any leftover Ground Beef Stir fry in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day.

METHOD

  • sauce

Combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, Hoisin sauce, beef stock, sugar, and a pinch of black pepper in a bowl. Make the thickening sauce. Stir cornstarch and beef stock or water in a small bowl.

  • prepare the vegetables

Clean the bell peppers, remove the seeds, and cut them into large pieces. Peel the carrot and cut it into thin slices (julienne style). Clean the spring onion and cut it into 5-cm or 2-inch slices. Peel the garlic and ginger and mince.

  • rice

Cook the Basmati rice according to the package instructions. This is how we cook it. Add the basmati rice to a sieve and rinse under running water. Add to a saucepan and add the water. The water should be 2 cm or 1 inch above the rice. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and cook covered for 11 minutes on low heat. Remove from the heat, and set aside covered.

  • cook

Place a wok pan or a large skillet over high heat. Add the sesame oil and ground beef. Pan-fry for 3 - 4 minutes; add garlic and ginger and continue to cook for 30 seconds. Add half of the sauce and fry for a minute. Add the rest of the prepared vegetables and stir for 2 minutes. Add the rest of the sauce and thickening sauce and toss to combine.

  • serve

Divide the cooked basmati rice between four plates. Arrange the ground beef stir fry on top. Optionally arrange the sprouts on top and sprinkle with sesame seeds, then serve.
